Play Modern Warfare 2 (PC) Multiplayer for Free This Weekend
Activision and Valve, in all their generosity, have gone all out with this latest announcement. Beginning Thursday, April 8, PC gamers that aren’t already hooked to Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have the opportunity to play the game’s multiplayer portion for free on Steam. The promotion will run for the rest of the weekend. Gamers keen on taking full advantage of this promotion can pre-load the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer client on Steam right now.
The ploy here is quite obvious. Activision and Valve are trying to lure in potential customers, hoping that many of them will enjoy the game enough to warrant a purchase (a tactic extensively used by Microsoft with its free month of Xbox Live Gold promotion). The result is that Activision makes money and Valve gets a cut from each Steam sale. In the end, everyone is happy. But why did Activision feel the need to employ such a strategy?
