Bogost’s Cow Clicker Illuminates the Baffling World of Facebook Games
As long time gamers, most of us have a hard time unraveling the enigma of Facebook social games. They seem to be obvious ploys to garner the biggest number of users whom all possess the most compulsive playing habits. Many of the social games have limits that encourage players to only play one or two minutes per day (sometimes much less), but incentivize players to return every day. These limits can often be broken if the player purchases in-game power-ups that allow them to play again without having to wait.
It sounds like a scam, but, of course, it isn’t. These social games are free, and no one is forced to pay anything. What they are guilty of is preying upon the most compulsive players. The people who have the least self-control.
These are my own criticism’s of social games. A much more qualified man, Ian Bogost, Videogame Researcher at Georgia Tech and Designer at Persuasive Games, has made his own critique of Facebook games and he did it in the form of – wait for – a Facebook game.
